Our projects are large and small, one-time and annual, ongoing and in the pipleline. In other words, we are busy!
We began with a year-long project to replace Cambria’s ugly old trashcans with gorgeous new, locally designed and built Trash-Recycling-Planter-Receptacles (we call them TRPRs, pronounced “trippers”). They’re a huge hit with locals and visitors alike.
We installed 26 Cambria designed and built trash-recycling-planter receptacles throughout the East and West villages. We’ve since added cigarette disposal tubes.
Our most recent large project centered around sprucing up our sidewalks, many of which are damaged, dangerous, non-ADA compliant, and showing their age. We secured a grant from SLO County to replace a section of sidewalk in front of Soto’s True Earth Market in the East Village. The new sidewalk features a bronze medallion depicting a Cambria Monterey pine. We hope that this will be the first of many such renovations.
We have two additional ongoing projects. First is the annual The Bee Faire. This came out of our desire to help our local pollinators, particularly butterflies, moths and bees. The Bee Faire takes place in early May, and raises awareness of the plight of bees, both European honey bees and native bees, with demonstrations, bee products and pollinator-friendly plants for sale, presentations and more.
Our other ongoing project is called Dark Skies and focuses on maintaining Cambria’s low levels of light pollution. Nighttime lighting is harmful to wildlife, including migratory birds, wastes energy and money, and does little to increase security. BCA is working with residents and county officials to take the steps necessary for Cambria to be certified as a Dark Skies Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. We host several star-gazing events each year.
Our Dark Skies initiative has tremendous local support including endorsements by the North Coast Advisory Council, SLO County Supervisor Bruce Gibson, the Central Coast Astronomical Society, and more.
